Week 2: Around day 10-14, your splint is removed. This is an exciting moment—you see your new nose for the first time! However, significant swelling remains, so your "new nose" at this point is not your final result. Your actual nose is still hidden under swelling.
By week two, pain has typically resolved, and you can carefully resume activities. You can resume light exercise and return to work, provided your job doesn't involve strenuous activity or activities that increase blood pressure or blood flow to your face.
Weeks 3-4: Swelling continues to decrease. You can resume more normal exercise. Most people can return to light sports like walking or gentle yoga. High-intensity exercise like running or contact sports should wait until at least week 6.
Weeks 5-6: Much of the obvious swelling has resolved, though subtle swelling remains. You likely feel completely normal and can resume all normal activities including more strenuous exercise. You can resume activities you'd avoided in the first weeks.
Months 2-3: Continue avoiding activities that risk nose trauma (contact sports, etc.). Swelling is now very subtle and only visible to you and your surgeon. Most people would not notice remaining swelling.
Months 4-12: Final swelling resolution is gradual over many months. Your true final result isn't fully apparent until around 12-18 months post-surgery, as very subtle final swelling continues resolving. However, your "presentable" appearance is usually achieved by month 3-4, when obvious swelling has resolved.
Following detailed post-operative instructions is crucial for optimal results:
Don't blow your nose for at least 2-3 weeks. If you must clear nasal passages, gently sniff or use saline rinse.
Don't get water on the surgical site until your surgeon clears it (usually after splint removal). After splint removal, gentle water contact is fine, but avoid hot showers that might increase nasal blood flow.
Don't place pressure or rub your nose for at least 4 weeks. This includes resting on your nose while sleeping.
Don't participate in contact sports for at least 6-8 weeks. Any impact to your nose could undo your surgery results.
Don't take aspirin or ibuprofen (or other blood thinners) for at least one week post-surgery unless specifically approved by your surgeon. These increase bleeding risk.
Don't smoke or use nicotine for at least 2-3 weeks. Smoking impairs circulation and delays healing.
Do use saline rinse for nasal cleaning as approved by your surgeon. This is gentler than blowing.
Do sleep elevated on multiple pillows for at least the first week.
Do apply cold compresses to reduce swelling during the first 24-48 hours, then warm compresses after that.
