A gastric balloon is a soft silicone balloon inserted into the stomach and inflated with saline or air. It occupies space, reducing stomach capacity and producing earlier satiety. Unlike sleeve or bypass, it is non-surgical, reversible, and typically temporary — most balloons are removed after six to twelve months.

The balloon is the right tool for the right patient: someone who needs help with portion control and weight loss but is not a candidate for — or not ready for — definitive bariatric surgery.

Who is a good candidate?

  • BMI 27–35 — the range where surgical bariatric is not indicated but significant weight loss is needed.
  • Patients who want a trial before committing to permanent surgery.
  • Pre-operative weight loss for major surgery in very high-BMI patients.
  • Commitment to using the balloon period to build lasting dietary habits — without the habits, weight returns after removal.

Types of balloon

Endoscopic balloon (traditional)

Inserted and removed via gastroscopy under sedation. The most common type. Typically worn for six months.

Swallowable balloon (Allurion)

Swallowed as a capsule that inflates in the stomach. No endoscopy for placement; passes naturally after about four months. Appealing for needle-averse patients.

The procedure

Sedation, twenty to thirty minutes, day-case. No surgery, no incisions. Placement and — for the endoscopic type — removal are both done via gastroscopy.

What to expect

The first week is the hardest. Nausea and cramping are common as the stomach adjusts; our nutrition team guides you through it with a specific diet protocol. From week two onward, most patients are comfortable and experience consistent appetite reduction. Expected loss is ten to fifteen per cent of total body weight over six months when paired with dietary guidance.

Risks and realistic expectations

Honest risks: persistent nausea leading to early removal (uncommon), balloon deflation (very rare with modern balloons), and — crucially — weight regain after removal if habits have not changed. The balloon is a time-limited tool, not a permanent solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a gastric balloon?
A gastric balloon is a soft silicone balloon inserted into your stomach via endoscopy (no surgery). It takes up space, reducing appetite and portion sizes. It's typically left in place for 6 months, then removed.
How much weight can I lose with a gastric balloon?
Most patients lose 15–25 lbs (7–11 kg) over 6 months with a gastric balloon. It's less dramatic than surgery but helpful for those wanting to test whether they can commit to lifestyle changes before permanent surgery.
How much does a gastric balloon cost?
Gastric balloon insertion at Estetica costs €2,200–€2,800, including placement, removal, and all follow-up visits. This is one of the most affordable weight-loss interventions and often covered partially by medical tourism packages.
Is balloon insertion painful?
No. The procedure is done under mild sedation via endoscopy. You'll feel pressure but no pain. Most patients wake up with mild bloating and nausea for 2–3 days, managed with anti-nausea medication.
What can I eat with a balloon?
You'll start with liquids and soft foods for the first week. Then normal foods in smaller portions. The balloon takes up ~50% of stomach space, so full feelings arrive quickly. Protein, vegetables, and hydration are priorities.
Can I remove the balloon early if I'm uncomfortable?
Yes. If you experience severe nausea, vomiting, or other complications, the balloon can be removed early via endoscopy. However, most discomfort resolves within the first 3–5 days as your stomach adapts.
