Gastric sleeve — sleeve gastrectomy — removes approximately eighty per cent of the stomach, leaving a narrow vertical "sleeve" about the size of a banana. Smaller stomach means smaller meals; reduced production of the hunger hormone ghrelin means reduced appetite. The operation is permanent and is the most-performed bariatric procedure worldwide.

This is serious surgery with life-changing benefits when performed on the right patient by an experienced team. It is not cosmetic — it is metabolic, and it treats obesity as the medical condition it is.

Who is a good candidate?

  • BMI of 35 or higher with obesity-related health conditions (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea).
  • BMI of 40 or higher regardless of other conditions.
  • Failed non-surgical weight management attempts documented over years.
  • Commitment to lifelong dietary and lifestyle changes.
  • No active psychiatric or substance-abuse conditions that would compromise post-operative compliance.

The procedure, step by step

Performed laparoscopically under general anaesthesia, one to two hours. Three nights in hospital is standard at our partner facilities.

The surgeon uses five or six small abdominal incisions for the laparoscopic instruments. A vertical stapler divides the stomach, removing the greater curvature. The remaining narrow sleeve is tested for leaks before closure. Results are typically sixty to seventy per cent of excess weight lost within twelve to eighteen months.

Recovery timeline

First 2–4 weeks

Liquid-only diet for the first two weeks, gradually progressing through puréed foods, soft foods, and finally solid foods over four weeks. Our nutrition team guides every step. Daily walking from day one. No heavy lifting for four weeks.

Weeks 4–8

Return to normal activity. Office work by week two to three for most patients. Continued progressive diet with emphasis on protein intake.

Months 3–18

Steady weight loss. Majority of the total loss happens in the first twelve to eighteen months. Ongoing nutrition follow-up and vitamin supplementation are essential, permanent, and not optional.

Risks and realistic expectations

Honest risks: leakage at the staple line (rare but serious, actively monitored), bleeding, gastroesophageal reflux (affects some patients long-term), and nutritional deficiencies if supplementation is not maintained. Long-term outcomes are excellent when patients follow the dietary and supplement protocol.

The surgery is a tool, not a magic solution. It works because the smaller stomach makes the right habits easier. Patients who revert to high-calorie liquid diets can regain weight. The best outcomes come from patients who treat the operation as the start of a lifelong change, not an end-point.

Why Istanbul

Turkey is a global centre for bariatric surgery, with some of the highest-volume units in the world. The combination of experienced surgeons, accredited hospitals, English-speaking multidisciplinary teams (nutritionists, psychologists, bariatric nurses), and all-inclusive pricing makes it one of the most rational destinations for sleeve gastrectomy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost of gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey?
At Estetica Istanbul, gastric sleeve surgery costs between $3,500-$4,500, making it the most affordable weight loss surgery option in Turkey. This all-inclusive price covers surgeon fees, hospital stay, anesthesia, all medical tests, medications, post-operative garments, nutritionist consultations, and 12-month follow-up care. This represents 60-70% savings compared to Western countries.
What BMI is required for gastric sleeve surgery?
The recommended BMI for gastric sleeve surgery is 35 or higher, or BMI of 30-35 if you have obesity-related health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea. However, each patient is individually assessed, and our surgeons at Estetica Istanbul may recommend the procedure for suitable candidates outside these ranges based on health circumstances.
How much weight will I lose after gastric sleeve surgery?
Most patients lose 60-70% of their excess body weight within 18-24 months following gastric sleeve surgery. For example, a patient weighing 300 lbs with an ideal weight of 180 lbs (120 lbs excess) would typically lose 72-84 lbs. Weight loss timeline is progressive, with the most significant loss occurring in months 3-12 post-surgery.
What dietary changes are necessary after surgery?
After gastric sleeve surgery, you'll follow a staged dietary progression: clear liquids (week 1), pureed foods (weeks 2-3), soft foods (weeks 4-6), and regular foods in small portions (month 3 onwards). Permanently, you'll eat 4-6 small meals daily (3-4 ounces per meal), chew thoroughly, and avoid sugary and fatty foods. Protein intake of 60-80g daily is essential, along with adequate water and vitamin supplementation for life.
Are there any risks or complications with gastric sleeve surgery?
While gastric sleeve surgery is one of the safest bariatric procedures, potential risks include staple line leakage, bleeding, infection, and blood clots. At Estetica Istanbul, our complication rate is below 2%, far lower than international averages. We utilize advanced surgical techniques and comprehensive pre-operative screening to minimize risks. Serious complications are rare, especially with experienced surgeons.
What is the recovery time for gastric sleeve surgery?
Most patients return to light activities within 7-10 days and to normal daily activities within 4-6 weeks. Hospital stay is 2-3 nights following surgery. You can return to light office work after 1-2 weeks and resume strenuous exercise and heavy lifting after 4-6 weeks. Most patients feel fully recovered within 6-8 weeks post-surgery.
Is gastric sleeve surgery reversible?
Gastric sleeve surgery is considered permanent because the removed stomach tissue cannot be restored. However, this is intentional, as the permanence ensures lasting results. Unlike gastric band surgery (which is adjustable and reversible), the sleeve gastrectomy provides irreversible, durable weight loss. This is why careful patient selection and commitment to lifestyle changes are crucial.
Can I get pregnant after gastric sleeve surgery?
Yes, pregnancy after gastric sleeve surgery is possible, but it requires careful planning. Most surgeons recommend waiting 18-24 months post-surgery before attempting pregnancy to allow weight stabilization and ensure adequate nutritional stores. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, increased nutritional supplementation is necessary. Our nutritionists at Estetica Istanbul provide specialized guidance for patients planning pregnancy post-surgery.
What vitamin supplements do I need after surgery?
After gastric sleeve surgery, you'll need lifelong vitamin supplementation including: multivitamin (with minerals), Vitamin B12 (monthly injections or sublingual), Calcium citrate with Vitamin D, and Iron (if female or if tests show deficiency). Regular blood tests monitor nutrient levels, and supplement dosages may be adjusted accordingly. Estetica Istanbul provides a customized supplement plan with your post-operative package.
How soon can I travel after gastric sleeve surgery?
You can safely fly home 5-7 days after gastric sleeve surgery at Estetica Istanbul. We recommend avoiding flights longer than 4 hours in the first month and waiting at least 2 weeks before driving. Our comprehensive post-operative care package includes support during your travel period, and our WhatsApp support team remains available for any concerns after you return home.
