Breast Lift

A breast lift — mastopexy — raises, reshapes, and firms breasts that have descended with time, weight change, or after breastfeeding. It does not change breast size significantly. For patients who also want volume, the operation is combined with an implant (lift-with-implant) or with fat transfer.

The right operation depends on two things: how much ptosis (drooping) is present, and whether you want to change volume. Matching the technique to the anatomy is what separates a clean, natural result from a visible, over-scarred one.

Who is a good candidate?

• Post-breastfeeding patients with deflated, drooping breasts.
• Post-weight-loss patients with significant ptosis.
• Patients with naturally ptotic breasts who want position restoration without significant size change.
• Completed childbearing (future pregnancy can undo results).
• Non-smoking at time of surgery — smoking dramatically increases healing complications in breast lift.

Scar patterns — what to expect

Every breast lift leaves scars. Technique choice determines the pattern. The trade-off is always: the more ptosis we correct, the more scar we need.

Periareolar (circumareolar) lift

Scar around the areola only. Suitable for mild ptosis. Limited lift achievable.

Vertical (lollipop) lift

Scar around the areola plus a vertical line down to the fold. Suitable for moderate ptosis. Excellent for reshaping without the horizontal component.

Anchor (inverted-T) lift

Lollipop scar plus a horizontal line in the breast fold. Suitable for significant ptosis. The most powerful reshaping tool.

Lift with implant

If you want both position and volume, a lift-with-implant is done in one session. It is technically more demanding than either operation alone and requires careful planning — but for the right patient it delivers both goals at once with a single recovery.

The procedure, step by step

Performed under general anaesthesia, typically two to three hours. One night in hospital.

The surgeon marks the new nipple position, removes excess skin according to the chosen pattern, reshapes the underlying breast tissue, and repositions the nipple-areola complex to a higher, age-appropriate location. If an implant is being added, the pocket is created and the implant placed before skin closure.

Recovery timeline

First 2 weeks

Moderate soreness. Supportive surgical bra worn twenty-four hours a day. Sleep on your back. No lifting, no overhead arm movement.

Weeks 2–4

Return to office work around week one to two. Swelling continues to settle. Arm range of motion gradually returns.

Months 2–6

Shape refines. Scars are pink and evolving. Final shape and scar maturation reach their endpoint around twelve months.

Risks and realistic expectations

Honest risks: scar visibility (permanent, though fading over a year), temporary nipple numbness, asymmetry, and — rarely — partial loss of nipple sensation or blood supply (risk increases significantly with smoking). Breastfeeding is usually preserved but cannot be guaranteed.

A breast lift produces a dramatically better shape and position — but scars are the trade-off. Patients who are not comfortable with that trade-off are not good candidates.
