Breast Reduction

Breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to produce a smaller, lifted, better-proportioned breast. It is one of the highest-satisfaction operations in plastic surgery because the patients who come for it are usually in significant physical discomfort — back pain, shoulder grooving, posture problems, skin irritation — that surgery actually resolves.

The procedure, step by step

Performed under general anaesthesia, typically two to four hours. One to two nights in hospital.

The surgeon removes a calculated volume of breast tissue and skin, repositions the nipple-areola complex to a higher, proportional location, and reshapes the remaining tissue into a supportive cone. The scar pattern is typically the anchor (inverted-T) — around the areola, down to the fold, and along the fold — though smaller reductions can use the vertical (lollipop) pattern.

Recovery timeline

First 2 weeks

Moderate soreness, mostly managed with standard painkillers. Supportive bra twenty-four hours a day. Sleep on your back. No lifting, no strenuous activity.

Weeks 2–4

Office work returns around week one to two. Most patients describe almost immediate relief from back and shoulder pain once the physical weight is removed.

Months 2–6

Final shape refines. Scars progress from pink to fine white lines over twelve to eighteen months.

Risks and realistic expectations

Honest risks: scarring (permanent but hidden under clothing), temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensation, asymmetry, and — in larger reductions — possible impact on future breastfeeding. Smoking significantly increases healing complications and is a contraindication at time of surgery.
