Thigh Lift

A thigh lift removes excess skin and fat from the inner or outer thigh to restore a smoother, more proportional leg contour. Like arm lift, it is an operation most often performed after significant weight loss or age-related skin laxity that exercise cannot address.

Who is a good candidate?

• Post-weight-loss patients with loose inner-thigh skin.
• Chafing, skin irritation, or difficulty with clothing due to thigh laxity.
• Stable weight within fifteen per cent of target.
• Non-smoking at time of surgery.

Types of thigh lift

Medial (inner) thigh lift

Most common. Scar hidden in the groin crease, extending down the inner thigh if laxity requires. Addresses the classic post-weight-loss presentation.

Outer (lateral) thigh lift

Often combined with a body lift. Scar runs along the hip and buttock.

Vertical thigh lift

Long vertical scar down the inner thigh. Indicated for severe skin laxity where shorter-scar options will not work.

The procedure, step by step

General anaesthesia, two to four hours, one to two nights in hospital. Liposuction is often combined with the skin excision to refine the contour.

Recovery timeline

First 2 weeks

Compression garments worn continuously for four to six weeks. Walking is encouraged early; sitting for long periods is not. Office work resumes around week two.

Weeks 3–6

Scar care begins as sutures heal. Light exercise around week four.

Months 3–12

Scar maturation over twelve to eighteen months. As with arm lift, the scar is permanent. Patients who need this operation consistently find the trade-off worthwhile.

Risks and realistic expectations

Honest risks: scar quality, seroma, and — with medial thigh lift specifically — possible scar descent if excess tension is placed on the closure. Experienced technique uses anchoring to the fascia to prevent this.
